Some federal drug offenders may be released early from prison

Late last year, President Obama chose to commute the sentences of eight individuals who had served a minimum of 15 years imprisonment for federal offenses involving crack cocaine. This action followed an announcement in August of last year made by Attorney General Eric Holder, who instructed the Justice Department to stop seeking overly-severe mandatory sentences for individuals charged with low-level federal drug charges if those individuals have no connections to large-scale drug operations or gangs.

Supreme Court to consider important cellphone warrant cases

Whether an individual is arrested on charges of organizing an international drug trafficking operation or is arrested on charges of low-level white crime, that individual has constitutional rights that must be respected by law enforcement unless the law specifically indicates otherwise. Unfortunately, the laws and policies indicating that one's constitutional rights may be infringed upon for specific purposes and under specific circumstances are not always clearly defined or consistently applied.
