Kaplan Marino’s Richard Kaplan and Nina Marino Named “Best Lawyers in America”

LOS ANGELES – August 26, 2022 – White collar criminal defense law firm Kaplan Marino announced today that Co-Founding Partners Richard Kaplan and Nina Marino are recognized in the 2023 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Best Lawyer awards are compiled by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which tens of thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers and honor only the top 5.3% of elite lawyers in the nation across 150 practice areas.

Kaplan manages serious criminal charges that threaten the livelihood and reputations of white-collar clients, including high net worth individuals, entrepreneurs, entertainers, corporations, and their officers and executives. During negotiations with authorities, Kaplan’s creative and novel strategies have led to numerous acquittals, no-charges-filed, probation, and record expungement outcomes for clients. His experience includes a range of allegations: fraud, narcotics, DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and domestic violence, among others. Several recent representations have involved #MeToo allegations, building code violations, and overcharging claims issued by weights and measure agencies against national chain stores.

Kaplan has built productive relationships across the legal profession, from the Los Angeles County and City Prosecuting Agencies to the U.S. Department of Justice to the National Conference of Bar Presidents, which he serves on its executive council. Kaplan was the 2018 president of the Beverly Hills Bar Association and a longtime leader of the organization.

Recognized by the Daily Journal as one of the top 25 white collar lawyers in California in 2020 and 2021, identified by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of California’s top women attorneys in 2020, and named by the National Law Journal as a Trailblazer for her impact on the legal profession, Marino’s complex litigation and white collar crime practice is national in scope.

Marino regularly negotiates with and litigates against the U.S. Department of Justice, local district attorneys, and other government agencies in her defense of people investigated or charged with matters involving healthcare fraud, international extradition, cybercrime, money laundering, customs violations, tax crimes, Ponzi schemes, public corruption, and regulatory issues involving cryptocurrency.

Marino has championed women’s issues for more than three decades. She has helped change the gender composition of the ABA’s educational programming and is a frequent speaker both domestically and internationally. She is also a regular author of articles and treatises on matters related to criminal law and international extradition.  Additionally, Marino is the founder of the Criminal Defense Law Section of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA) and the Los Angeles chapter of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association (WWCDA). In addition, Nina serves on the board of directors of C5LA, which focuses on creating a path to college for underserved youth.
